A CROWDFUNDING page has been set up to help St Austell Arts Centre update it’s outdated fire alarm system.

The 144-seat theatre on Truro Road requires major refurbishment, with the installation of an automatic fire alarm system being the most urgent priority.

The work that needs to be carried out to replace the outdated fire detection system is expected to cost between £16,000 to £18,000.

The centre, which is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), operates as a lively community and professional venue, hosting local groups, U3A activities, bridge clubs, and regular entertainment events.

It’s history goes back to the 1950s, when volunteers dismantled a former wartime wooden hut from St Eval airbase, moved it piece by piece to Truro Road, and rebuilt it as a community theatre.

It later became the permanent home and rehearsal base of the St Austell Players, the amateur dramatic group that founded was in 1945. At a time when the area had few dedicated arts venues, the centre offered an important space for drama, music, dance, bridge, and community events.

Trustees at the centre are now exploring crowdfunding and match funding to raise the money needed to protect the community groups, performers, and audiences that visit the facility.

Those who donate to the cause will have their names recorded on a plaque inside the theatre.
