Cricket- County Division Three (East)

Fowey v Newquay

Following three consecutive defeats Fowey were in much need of a couple of victories and morale boosting performances from their double weekend encounters against lowly Newquay and Luckett. Winning the toss and electing to insert the opposition, Fowey were again unable to make the early breakthrough as the Newquay openers rode their luck and put on 47 for the first wicket.

A couple of quick wickets followed before a stand of 79 between skipper Tony Roberts (33) and Mike Jelbert (34), combined with some indifferent bowling, enabled the opposition to form a good foundation on which to build the latter stages of their innings. With 26 wides and 38 extras being the top scorer, Newquay gained maximum batting points from their 206 for 8 off 48 overs. Mick Meares with 2 for 37 off 12 overs and Tony Whyatt 3 for 49 off 13 were the steadier of the Fowey bowlers, whilst Andrew Bennetts' 3 wickets off 14 overs cost 71 runs.

Fowey showed a determined approach to the challenge by immediately setting about the Newquay opening bowlers. Robbie Bennetts, having made a positive start to his innings, unfortunately struck the ball firmly into the hands of the Newquay skipper, resulting in his dismissal.

Mike Hamilton, promoted to the opening spot for this game, was joined by in-form Andrew Bennetts and this pair continued the assault on the medium paced bowling attack, as the boundary was continually found with consistent ease by both batsmen.

Hamilton reached his first 50 of the season and this was soon followed by another 50 from Andrew Bennetts. Both batsmen continued to play a good selection of strokes around the ground and when it looked as if they would see off the target required, Andrew Bennetts was caught and bowled twelve runs short of that total for an excellent 87, sharing in a match winning second wicket partnership of 180. When the winning run was struck in the 38th over, Mike Hamilton was undefeated on 87, having returned to form with a determined and match winning performance.
