A BROTHER and son described as ‘very loyal’ and a ‘nice person’ was ‘so scared he was going to take someone else’s life’ as his family struggled to find him the necessary support, an inquest has heard.
The first day of an inquest into the death of Penzance-man Kainan Dayus, known as ‘Kain Kernow’ to many, has heard how he and his family ‘felt so helpless’ to find the mental health support he needed.
Speaking to the court, Kain’s mother Michaela explained the reality of Kain’s condition, something which she became aware of from a young age. ‘He always did his best to behave’, she said, however, his behaviour made it clear that something wasn’t typical.
After taking him to the doctors, Michaela became frustrated with what she referred to as the blasé attitudes of professionals who she says quickly disregarded traits as ‘simply the way his personality was’. Struggling in school, Kain was eventually diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia.
As he got older, Kain began experiencing homicidal thoughts. His mother told the inquest that he felt that killing another person would stop the feelings he was experiencing, which at times made him rip his skin off.
Despite the concern of these thoughts, the court heard how Kainan himself was deeply troubled and worried about these intrusive thoughts. His mother explained how he once expressed his desire to carry out a ‘Raoul Moat’, killing those who he disliked before taking his own life.
During these incidents, Kain’s mother explained how she sought to find him the necessary support, something which left her feeling ‘so helpless’ as she was consistently passed between police and medical services.
However, Kain’s struggles came to a head when he decided to take his own life at the promenade in Penzance on June 11, 2024, aged only 28.
Assistant coroner Emma Hillson, is expected to continue the case in the coming days.
