A Tamar Valley couple have celebrated their blue sapphire wedding anniversary after 65 years of marriage.

Peter and Marian Mayall were married in their native Lancashire when they were both 22 after a two-year courtship.

They’d met at the Young Conservatives Club in Accrington and, said Mr Mayall, ‘It was love at first sight. We just hit it off.’

Mr Mayall is a retired welder and his wife worked in local government.

They moved to their home in Harrowbarrow nearly 25 years ago to be near their son Christopher and his family who lived in Plymouth, where Christopher was based with the Royal Navy.

Mrs Mayall was an expert flower arranger, and Mr Mayall, a keen gardener, is a member of the Callington lodge of the Freemasons.

Mrs Mayall has been suffering from dementia for the past four years, and is looked after at home by her husband and visiting carers.
