St Stephens Borough crashed out of the Cornwall Junior Cup in the second round courtesy of a very much below par performance and despite twice taking the lead. Borough got the best possible start when Mark Pollard fired them ahead in the opening minutes after good play from Rocky O'Rourke.
However they proceeded to let Queens equalise before Nick Yeo restored their lead only minutes after the equaliser had gone in after being set up by Martin Crofts.
The Borough scorers then proceeded to turn from heroes into villains. As the half neared its conclusion Pollard was caught in possession in the centre circle and Queens broke through to equalise.
The home side showed the better appetite for the game and had the better of the exchanged, never allowing Borough to play any of their attractive football for which they are becoming renowned.
Ross Grimwood replaced Dave McAuley at the interval and Tim Lyle subsequently replace O'Rourke as Borough tried to get into the match.
New striker Idrissou Rassikou replaced Crofts for the final 10 minutes as Borough tried to get the defensive third goal. As it was the home team got that vital breakthrough.
The referee, failed to spot a home player going in 'studs up' on Grimwood. The free-kick which should have gone to Borough was was floated into the box. Nick Yeo rose highest in a packed penalty area and powered a header into the top corner of the net. His goal celebrations quickly died down when it was pointed out to him that it was his own net!
That was it and there was no way back for Borough. They pressed hard for an equaliser but it was not to be and Rangers took advantage of Borough's desperation to score their fourth and clinch a place in the next round.
All credit must go to the home players who showed the better determination to win more. Borough, on the other hand, will be bitterly disappointed with their performance and it is one that they can't repeat if they hope to be successful this season.
