A CORNISH café which rescues food and nourishes the community is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary at a special event this month.

Millbrook-based Café Abundance (CIC) will be marking a decade of operation after they held their first community lunch in Torpoint back in 2016.

The organisation rescues hundreds of kilos of food every week and makes it available to the local community on a Pay As You Can basis. The cafe team cook with ingredients that would otherwise have been thrown away, transforming them into nutritious meals.

The community lunches and shop tables they provide serve an average of 150 individuals every week. There are 43 volunteers within the current Café Abundance team, ranging from 13 to 85 years of age.

To celebrate their momentous 10th year milestone, a special ‘thank you’ social evening is being planned at the Edgcumbe Arms in Cremyll later this month.

The Café Abundance team have set up a GoFundMe page in an effort to help cover the cost of the anniversary celebration, which will be hosted by valued partners and food donors of the organisation.

Volunteer Patricia Dillon said: “Many of our visitors regularly tell us that we are a lifeline for them, and that thanks to the food that they have access to, they can provide their families with balanced meals.

“The donations from those who use our services enable us to pay our bills. We do not currently receive any funding.

“At the core of our development and success is our team. They each radiate their extraordinary and committed selves, dedicating their time, experience and care to contribute to keeping all of this, all of us, going.

“We would love to mark our 10th anniversary, a momentous milestone, by holding an event to celebrate all of our current volunteers and their supporting partner. Thanks in advance for any contribution that you are able to give to this momentous milestone!”
