CONCERNS have been raised over plans to create a new waste transfer facility at the Connon Bridge Tip.
Online meetings between Suez and residents of East Taphouse area are set to be held today and tomorrow to discuss the proposals, which have yet to come before Cornwall Council as a planning application.
The initial plans are for a new building that would take food waste from South East Cornwall once food waste becomes part of the kerbside collections.
The changes would also see the Connon Bridge site processing more street cleaning waste and general refuse than it does at present.
In a letter to residents, Suez says that the additions to the facility are being made in order to implement Cornwall’s new waste and recycling collection service, to cater for the county’s growing population, and so that the company can play its part in acting against climate change.
But residents of the area have expressed fears that a ’worst case scenario’ set out by Suez would see the number of vehicles coming in and out of the site increase from current levels of 102 to 204 per day.
Janise Philp, who is also a St Pinnock parish councillor, said: ’Not only would this cause a very bad smell issue but the amount of vehicle movements would be doubled. This also includes vehicles from other council operations.’
The webinars for local interested parties are taking place this afternoon and tomorrow.
