IN the penultimate week of East Cornwall skittles two major events took part in the way of the Captain's Night and the Pairs Competition Finals.
Sadly on the captains night, which was held this year at Pensilva Millennium Centre, another disappointing attendance where just 17 of the 44 captains turned up After each player had bowled 18 balls it showed one player had to be dropped, allowing the top 16 scorers to enter into a knock-out competition. The lowest scorer was Joe Knight, captain of the Jets.
Knock-out results - Rose James (Ladybirds) 66 pins v Martin Gilbert (Cast-Offs) 60 pins; Simon Pain (Crickets) 83 pins v Marion Rice (Marquees) 78 pins; Shirley Mills (Marketeers) 66 pins v Shirley Raines (Madhatters) 65 pins; John Millett (Nomads) 59 pins v Mavis Jeffery (Barley Oats) 56 pins; Chris Hill (Terriers) 70 pins v Roger Terry (Hits & Misses) 65 pins; Colin Penwarden (Misfits) 56 pins v John Whetter (Edwardians) 51 pins; Jo Elliott (Demons) 87 pins v Dave Pritchard (Four X 4's) 73 pins; Mike Medlen (Hobos) v Austin Trevail (Hotshots) 60 pins.

So the scene was set for a grand final between Misfits Colin Penwarden who happens to be the sponsor of the Captains Trophy and the Crickets Captain Simon Pain, who had been high scoring all evening. At the halfway mark Simon had a one pin advantage but missed a vital spare to allow Colin to end the evening as the best captain on the night winning by 5 pins (68 63).
The pairs final took place at Millendreath where the top 16 from earlier round in April took to the alleys.

So the scene was set for a grand finale between two pairs who had been bowling extremely well all evening and after a five minutes interlude and a top up of liquid refreshment the coin was tossed. Roger & Steve from Hits & Misses took a first half lead of three pins over Andy & Bill representing the Rebels, also from Division One. However, disaster struck the Hits & Misses duo missing those vital spares, allowing Andy Hassam and Bill Batten to romp home the victors by 10 pins (103-93) and for the first time have their names engraved on the pairs shield.
Still best so far in competition games - Men's highest score, Colin Wood (Hobos) 104 pins; Ladies' highest score, Hannah Parsons (Hits and Misses) 89 pins; Men's highest spare, Maurice Brown (Nomads) 26 pins; Ladies highest spare, Mary Pethick (Woodentops) 21 pins.
