WITH six months of A30 roadworks causing chaos only a number of weeks after launch, here is everything you need to know about upcoming disruption.

At the start of August, National Highways revealed a swathe of upgrades it plans to carry out along the A30. These six-month works are being undertaken in an effort to improve the safety of the road.

On August 5, works officially got underway, causing almost immediate chaos as cars, vans, caravans, and even ambulances fought their way through the region’s B-roads as the road was completely closed in both directions between Five Lanes and Kennards House overnight.

Many drivers and residents will be pleased to see the back of the complete closures, however, the improvements - which are set to be carried out until at least March - are bringing a number of other challenges for motorists.

From September 7 until March 2027, National Highways has confirmed that only one lane on the A30 will open in each direction at all times, with 40mph and 50mph speed limits in place between Kennards House and Five Lanes.

With these restrictions having been in place for only a number of days, drivers have already expressed their frustration, with some even reporting journey times of over an hour to travel between Bodmin and Launceston.

Following this, on September 23, the A30 westbound will be closed from 9pm until 6am between Kennard's House and Five Lanes, meaning those looking to travel along the stretch will instead by diverted along alternative routes.

The final full closure comes during the same hours, along the same stretch, on September 30, in both directions.

Though, while the road will remain open, National Highways has stated that a number of junctions are set for closure along the route.

Until November this year, the eastbound side of the Polyphant junction into Holyway Cross will be closed at all times.

On top of this, from September24, 2026, until January 2027, the A30 westbound side of Plusha junction will also be closed around the clock.

A spokesperson from National Highways said: “Please remember the short diversion route won't be available during A30 full closures while this junction is closed.”

The organisation has also expressed that there will ‘be further road and junction closures’ towards the end of the works, though this has not yet been confirmed.

Already these works have attracted criticism, with councillors and MPs expressing their concern over plans.

Cornwall Councillor Adrian Parsons (Altarnun and Stoke Climsland) said: “We have seen absolute chaos on our rural roads. Lanes have become gridlocked, with all manner of vehicles trying to find the quickest route to their destination.”

The area’s MP has even stepped in. Ben Maguire, MP for North Cornwall, explained: "Following the first two overnight closures of the A30 between Altarnun and Launceston, I've written to the Regional Director of National Highways requesting an urgent review of the signage and routes chosen.

"Whilst these road safety improvements are important, any overnight diversions need to be clearly marked and considerate of the capacity of the local road network.”
