MOTORISTS who park on the pavement could face fines of up to £1,000, say police in Callington.

Local officers say they have received a number of calls recently about the issue.

‘To park your vehicle on the pavement you must drive onto it,’ said a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police.

‘This is a separate offence, and if this is witnessed by a police officer you could be fined up to £1,000.

‘Pavement parking creates hazards for pedestrians, particularly blind people, children, and wheelchair and pushchair users, because it forces people out in to the road, putting them at risk from traffic.

‘Causing an obstruction by parking on the pavement is also an offence for which you can be fined.’

One mum who posted on social media said she avoids certain areas of Callington because of the danger.

‘I push a double pushchair around Callington most days and the places I try to avoid now are Beech Road, Inney Close and Goodwood Emporium,’ she said.

‘You can bet I’ll have to push the pushchair on the road at least once or twice and with the way people drive around these streets it just isn’t safe.’

Another resident said that she had seen increased parking on pavements in the estates.

A police spokesperson said: ‘Please think before you park, you could be putting people’s lives at risk.’
