TRURO CITY boss John Askey admitted his side had to be ‘satisfied with that’ as the Tinners kept up their unbeaten start in National League South with a goalless draw at Chelmsford City on Saturday.
The Cornishmen made the long trip to Essex having seen off Maidenhead United on matchday one, and the boss named an unchanged side.
Truro started the brighter, but it was former Championship striker Lyle Taylor that forced Aidan Stone into a save just after the 15-minute mark.
The ambitious hosts continued to build pressure and again Stone denied Taylor, before Truro’s Will Dean went close on 39 minutes from a loose ball in the home area, however Nathan Ralph was well-positioned to block.
A three-on-one counter-attack in first half injury-time ended with Taylor slotting past Stone after being released by Rhys Browne, however the linesman put up his flag for offside.
After the restart a superb throughball from Truro striker Jack Stretton sent Yassine En-Neyah clear, but a brilliant challenge from Ben Tompkins denied him.
The hosts had their moments again but found City’s defensive shape tough to break down, and Truro were helped with 20 minutes to play when Taylor was forced off injured.
Stone denied sub Leo Sery on 83 minutes before the visitors were in a whisker of winning it on 88 minutes as sub Dom Johnson-Fisher couldn’t quite divert Luke Jephcott’s superb free-kick in at the far post.
There was still time for Stone to deny Adam May from a promising free-kick at the start of injury-time as Truro took a deserved point back to the Duchy.
Reflecting on their afternoon’s work in Essex, Askey said: “There was very little in the game, but the lads have performed really well and on another day we might have nicked it. But we’ve got to be satisfied with that, they’ve got a lot of quality and we’ve matched them today.”
Askey admitted they didn’t quite get it right in attack, but was delighted with their resilience.
He said: “”I thought when we were breaking away from them we got brought down. There were three or four times when we were getting in behind and they were the last man and brought the player down, and we also created one or two chances. We had a lot of free-kicks in dangerous areas, and on another day we might have nicked it, but I was really pleased with how we’ve defended at the end against those set-pieces. That should stand us in good stead.”
Truro were backed by a noisy travelling contingent, a fact not lost on the former York City boss.
He concluded: “I’m not Cornish so I didn’t know what to expect when I came to the club, but the support has been brilliant.
“For so many to come up here is amazing and they always get behind the team. Last year was a very testing time for them and very few moaned, and we really appreciate them.
Hopefully we can give them something to shout about and have a really good season, because they deserve it.”
