Westminster Lowdown with Colin Breed M.P. - Major renovations over the recess
The last week before recess is always a sweeping up of various things. The legislation that can be completed is finished and the workmen begin preparing the Palace of Westminster for the work programme, which lasts for the whole recess period. A major programme has been going on for some years, including renovations, conservation and updating of facilities.
This time, the former Grand Committee Room off Westminster Hall is being converted into a 'second chamber'. This will allow additional debates of a non-controversial nature to be heard, as there is so much pressure of time in the main chamber. It will also have seating in a hemisphere not as confrontation benches. Some members fear it to be a waste of money and effort but a large majority of them voted to experiment.
I shall once again do a village tour in the constituency during the recess and hope to see many of you during that time. Please remember I shall continue surgeries all throughout the recess time if you want to see me.
